Everything old is new again. Big over-sized bulky menswear inspired silhouettes and fabrics are back in vogue this season. I guess we can at least be thankful they have ditched the ridiculous shoulder pads that made us all look like miniature line backers. Perhaps you, like me appreciate a well worn tweed or woven plaid; the juxtaposition of heavy fabrics reminiscent of a mahogany embellished mens club or smoking room from the 1920’s hanging delicately over a woman’s curves finished off with a fine pair of stilettos. Never fear, I have found a couple of beautiful coats with a modern take on the classic tweed and plaid that still have a luxurious feminine feel without making you look like you sneaked into grandpa’s closet and stole a couple pieces during his afternoon nap. Case in point this fabulous Hale Bob woolly tweed sweater coat with rabbit fur trim. Mixing his and hers is a smart way to embrace the Menswear trend without getting buried by it. It seems that everywhere you look these days the word Ponte keeps popping up, but if you are not a committed fashionista or in the garment industry it is very likely that this is word that you, like me, just skip over without giving it much thought. Big mistake. It turns out when a designer lists an item with the term Ponte they are trying to communicate some very important pieces of information to us about the wear, fit and durability of the fabric. Ponte has become so popular because it can overcome a lot of challenges for us ladies in the traditional problem areas; curious? Let me explain.
The word Ponte is derived from the phrase “Ponte Di Roma” which means “Roman Bridge.” It refers to the double knit design of this fabric which creates a mirror image so that the fabric looks the same on both sides. As a result of its double knit construction it resists wrinkles and creases, is very durable, it is soft and flexible while still holding its shape (it does not stretch out) and is firm enough to hold in and hide all of your extra baggage (if you get my drift). All in all it is the perfect fabric for fall and winter. Shop Posh at Play where we always have a great selection of women’s clothing.
