EMMY AWARD FASHION

The Stars swooped in bold, smooth, and confident at this year’s 66th Annual Emmy Awards held at the Nokia Theater in downtown L.A. While it may seem “cliche” to wear red on the “Red Carpet,” actresses didn’t think twice about it this year, as pinks, corals, and reds dominated, following one of Fall’s top Fashion Trends this Season of red from head to toe as seen from the Prada to Valentino runways. There were many hits as well as a few misses this Emmy Awards, with designers trying new ideas as well as playing it safe. Other top Fall Fashion trends seen at this year’s Emmy Awards included “Old Hollywood” 30’s glamour, bright colors, cobalt blue, metallics,  the ballerina bun, natural make-up, brown smokey eye, and tousled bob. Below, are some of the most buzzed about celebrity styles from the 66th Emmy Awards Red Carpet, and my own take on how the stars handled Fall Fashion trends, from the best to the worst.

THE HITS

 TAYLOR SCHILLING IN ZUHAIR MURAD

Though it didn’t win any Emmy Awards this year, “Orange is the New Black” star Taylor Schilling, in my opinion, certainly won the award for most glamorous on the Red Carpet at this year’s Emmys. Decked out in a beautiful jeweled Zuhair Murad gown, Taylor shimmered with “Old Hollywood” 1930’s glam, a trend on the Fall Fashion runways this Season. Taylor’s stylist Richard Maran gathered the star’s hair into a loose, low bun with delicate, effortless waves, finishing the look with this Fall Season’s popular “brown smoky eye” with just a hint of glitter in the creases. Taylor has me wanting to copy this glamorous look with Laura Mercier’s secret camouflage foundation, nude smoky eye palette, and sparkling lip glisse. I’ll also be shopping the 30’s style trend this Fall, from Hale Bob’s beaded blouses for casual days to BCBG Max Azria’s  glamorous dresses for an evening out. Taylor Schilling takes the top award in Fall Fashion Trends for this year’s Emmy Awards.

 HEIDI KLUM IN ZAC POSEN

Fashion icon Heidi Klum always impresses on the Red Carpet. With designer Zac Posen as her date, Heidi ravished in a coral Zac Posen gown, and completed the look with chic Jimmy Choo shoes and Lorraine Schwartz jewelry for the perfect glamorous touch. I love Heidi’s look because not only does she appear perfectly put together, she also oozes confidence and femininity in a perfectly balanced approach. Heidi’s “beachy waves,” a popular look for Fall Hairstyles 2014, perfectly match the delicate shape of the dress’s flutter sleeves. This Fall, I’ll try the “beach wave” look by running John Master’s Organic Sea Spray through damp hair, blow drying, applying Bumble and Bumble Texture Creme, and curling random strands away from face with Chi Ultra Ceramic Flat Iron. Heidi Klum’s Emmy look was definitely one of my top choices this year.

 ROBIN WRIGHT IN RALPH LAUREN

Though not as highly praised by most fashion critics, I couldn’t help but notice the lovely Robin Wright in a custom designed Ralph Lauren pantsuit. While most women opt for the traditional dress, Robin took a big fashion risk wearing a suit to the Emmy Awards. I applaud her daring, as well as her fashion-forward approach, as “menswear” is a big Fall Fashion trend this season seen on the J.Crew to Christian Dior runways. Robin took a feminine approach to the  menswear pantsuit with a glamorous cut-out back, fitted trousers showing off her feminine physic, natural make-up, and upswept hairdo. I hope this “backless” pantsuit takes off. I’ll be the first one to buy one.

Sarah_Hyland_0

 SARAH HYLAND IN CHRISTIAN SIRIANO

“Modern Family’s” 23-year-old Sarah Hyland showed a glamorous yet playful side in her Christian Siriano white top and coral A-line skirt, befitting of her youth and exuburance. The half-top look is a little risky sometimes, as it can come across as being too “showy,” “risqué,” or just plain tacky. Sarah pulls off the look beautifully by showing off her body in a tasteful and chic manner, while alluding to the “sport-inspired” trend hitting the Fall Fashion shows this year from DKNY to Tom Ford. With glowing bronzed toned skin, Sarah continued the chic look with the very popular Fall Hairstyle 2014 trendthe ballerina bun. Not just reserved for the gym, Sarah’s fashion forward sense makes me want to try the half top look for daytime with H & M’s crop top and skinny jeans  or evening wear with Bebe’s Colorblock midi dress.

 AMY POEHLER IN THEIA

As I posted in last week’s Fall Fashion Blog, metallics are here in a big way, from dresses, to handbags, to jackets, to shoes. Parks and Recreation’s Amy Poehler, as well as Gwen Stefani and Taryn Manning,  rocked the Red Carpet on Emmy night in shimmering metallics. Amy chose a vintage “20’s” style silver dress by Irish designer Don O’Neill for Theia Couture, accessorized with Lorraine Schwartz jewelry, popular with celebrities. She finished off her glamorous look with Fall Hairstyle Trend, tousled “beachy” waves and neutral, natural makeup. While she did take a more traditionally accepted Red Carpet fashion approach expected at these events, with her blonde hair and confident presence, Amy Poehler oozes “Old Hollywood” glamour reminiscent of Carole Lombard, Lauren Bacall, and Marilyn Monroe. She knows her body well, and how to play up her best features, pleasing both her audience as well as fashion critics.

THE MISSES

 JULIA ROBERTS IN ELIE SAAB

While many fashion critics praised Julia Roberts’ fashion sense on this year’s Emmy Red Carpet, I found her Elie Saab dress a little drab and not as flattering as her toned physic deserves. I love her daring confidence to choose a shorter dress, while most celebs stuck with the traditional long gown, showing off her perfectly toned legs. She beautifully carries off Fall Hairstyle and Makeup trends with her carefree tousled “beach” waves and natural makeup, showing a flawless, ageless complexion. While I love the plunging deep “V” neckline and flattering long sleeves (also a daring fashion move), I feel that the length of the skirt should have gone either shorter above the knee, or longer with Fall Fashion’s “midi” skirt trend. I also feel that the popular “A” line silhouette does not suit Julia’s fit figure, and the added “peplum” material at the hipline only adds bulk and volume not needed. Change the shape of the skirt, and I would have loved Julia’s Red Carpet look.

 KERRY WASHINGTON IN PRADA

Another raved about look from fashion critics at this year’s Emmys, Kerry Washington’s Prada dress just didn’t satisfy. While the actress sparkled in a beautiful orange-citrus colored gown, a Fall Fashion trend, accented with glittering silver trim, the “peek-a-boo” black mini dress just didn’t work. The black skirt cuts off the actress’s gorgeous leg line and shows hesitancy rather than daring as Angelina Jolie pulled off successfully at the 2012 Academy Awards. While I applaud Kerry Washington’s coy demeanor and wanting to remain conservative, the “Scandal” actress could have done without the underskirt, or worn a black sequined mini skirt instead. Though I did love her Fall Hairstyle center part, I also would have loved a little more style and shape to her hairdo. Kerry Washington, however, rocked the “smoky eye” Fall Makeup trend and she was positively glowing as a new Mama.

 CHRISTINA HENDRICKS IN MARCHESA

Christina Hendricks appeared radiant in Fall Fashion’s hottest color trend at this year’s Emmy Awards in a red Marchesa gown with delicate gold detailing. While red usually isn’t the best color on a redhead, the actress looked positively glowing and the color perfectly suits her. However, in comparing Christina Hendricks’ look from the Emmys 2010, this gown simply didn’t fit the actress’s luscious curves. The additional fabric around the waistline made for a heavy appearance, and the swarms of skirt around the legs seemed bunched instead of flowing and elegant. The actress would have fared best in a red Marchesa”mermaid” silhouette with smoother chiffon fabric, accentuating her lovely physic. I will be copying her “sun kissed” make up look for Fall with Pur Minerals Creme blush and Pur Minerals lipstick in Starlet used by makeup artist Vanessa Scali.

 MAYIM BIALIK IN OLIVER TOLENTINO

Cobalt Blue was a major winner for many actresses at this year’s Emmy Awards including Mayim Bialik, however, I believe actresses Melissa Rauch and Keke Palmer pulled off the look much more successfully with modern silhouettes rather than outdated long sleeve lace. Though the Fall Fashion  Cobalt Blue color scheme looked lovely on the actress, the dress’s shape made her appear much older than her 38 years. Her up-do, though trendy for Fall Hairstyles, looked old fashioned and outdated. The actress would have looked years younger with luscious waves or a sleek ponytail, also trending for Fall Hairstyles. While it is perfectly admirable that the actress prefers more conservative gowns and “feels more comfortable when things aren’t hanging out,” I think she would have sparkled in a Giorgio Armani long sleeve gown with an updated shape. I can’t wait to try the Cobalt Blue color this Fall, though.

LENA DUNHAM IN GIAMBATTISTA VALLI COUTURE

Lena Dunham, star of TV’s “Girls” and “poster girl to women who are confident enough to wear clothes that imbue wit and eccentricity” (VOGUE, January 2014), appeared confident in a brightly colored Giambattista Valli Couture gown. Though she didn’t win an Emmy, her dress won the award for the “most talked about” among Fashion Critics and easily the most polarizing look from this year’s Emmy Awards. Though I applaud the actress for taking a very Fashion forward move, with this design appearing at the Fall Collection for Giambattista Valli in Paris, the shape just doesn’t compliment the actress’s figure. While the luscious bright pink skirt is a great Fashion statement and the color looks great on the actress, the loose fitting shirt looks messy. Lena Dunham could have fared best with a tighter fitting top to compliment the long flowing skirt as seen in her other fabulous Red Carpet looks at the 2013 Director’s Guild Awards and the 2014 Golden Globes. Unlike other Fashion Critics, I do, however, love the actress’s chic blonde bob trending for Fall Hairstyles 2014. I think it gives her a youthful, trendy, edgy appearance.

Modern-family_590_590_90

While there were many winners and losers at the 66th Annual Emmy Awards, for the most part, fashions scored a big success, remaining stylish, chic, forward thinking, and trendy. Long gone are the classic formal black gowns. This Season, Hollywood turns to big, bold colors and daring, dramatic silhouettes, grabbing styles and trends seen on all the major Fall Fashion runways this Season, from hot red, to bold brights, to cobalt blue. Hair and makeup stayed classic with the Ballerina Bun and natural colors or went dramatic with Bleach blonde bobs and smoky eyes. The key to mastering the trends from the Fall Fashion runways this season is adapting the looks to your own body in your own unique way. Unlike Lena Dunham or Kate Walsh who simply wore the same dress as on the runway, get creative this Season, be your own Fashion Designer, and adapt one of your favorite Fall Fashion looks to play up the best in you. “Don’t change to fit the fashion, change the fashion to fit you.”

FALL FASHION TRENDS

Fur2014

Bigger is better this FALL 2014. From furs to skirts to sweaters, designers around the world went for big and bold this Season in fashion and clothing design, in contrast to HAIR and MAKEUP trends which remained subtle and natural. There are so many unique and exciting fashion statements made on the runways for the FALL/WINTER Collections, it is hard to narrow it all down. But, take a look at some of our favorite FALL FASHION TRENDS  making their mark this Season.

Red

RETRO 60’S RED

Red from head to toe. Designers from Prada to Valentino this Season took one of Fall’s favorite colors, and went all out by pairing red on red. With a nod to the swinging 60’s, European designers went for mini skirts and Gogo boots,  as a countercurrent to the longer “Midi” skirt, also trending this Fall 2014. Make a fashion statement this Season by pairing a chic red Oscar de la Renta dress with red Jimmy Choo patent pointy toe pumps and finish the look with a red Akris handbag.

Not just reserved for the Ski Resort,” turtleneck” necklines go high this Fall 2014, so don’t be afraid to cover it all up this Season. Designers Alexander Wang featured cozy turtleneck sweaters, Balenciaga featured high neck dresses, and Alexander McQueen featured tall neck coats on the Runways this Season. From dresses to coats to blouses, the high neckline is suitable this Season for work, play, or a night on the town. From the days of Bacall and Hepburn, designers gave a nod to old Hollywood glamour with 30’s and 40’s- inspired discreet tailoring. Updating the look for Fall 2014, designers from Givenchy to Hugo Boss paired the “menswear” look with feminine touches such as silky skirtsfitted jackets, and sheer blouses to enhance the feminine physic. Sport the “menswear” look this Season in style with Hale Bob’s wide leg cream trousers with delicate gold studded detail and pair with an Express silky tank for a Holiday party or pair with a cozy J Crew cashmere sweater  and chic Dolce & Gabbana sunglasses for daytime glam.

a1eb2f1863b14fdd260dd2a7b83c9747NORWEGIAN PRINTS

The cooler weather has us thinking cozy sweaters, fireside marshmallows, and hot cocoa. Designers from Burberry to Tommy Hilfiger flooded the runways this Fall 2014 with plenty of cozy “Norwegian” print sweaters, jackets, skirts, and hats, perfect for those cold snowy days. Pair a cozy Hale Bob oversized sweater with Hudson skinny  jeans or a Topshop midi skirt and Rag and Bone ankle boots for a perfect cozy Fall 2014.

BOYFRIEND JEANS

“The Boyfriend’s back”…..but he’s not in trouble. Trade in your skinny jeans this Fall 2014 for one of this Season’s hottest new jeans trend. This Fall, designers paired the Boyfriend jean with chic heels for a sophisticated look. Grab your favorite Alexandre Caugant AC Collection Boyfriend Jeans and pair with a chic Hale Bob blazer and Marissa Webb black heels and you’re ready for work or play.

2760aec6035845c22eeb06b9b721af93LEOPARD & LEATHER

Two of the Season’s favorite styles merge together this Fall 2014 for an updated, glamorous look. Starting in the Spring 2014, animal prints were seen all over the runways from Givenchy to Tom Ford . The look carries into Fall 2014, with leopard and animal print skirts, jackets, and pants. Leather, another favorite trend for Fall, is not just confined to the jacket. This Season, designers from Gucci to Coach featured leather dresses, skirts, shorts, leggings, coats, and handbags, making the style suitable for exercise, casual, work, play or evening. Grab these two looks this Season with a chic leopard-print Lafayette pencil midi skirt and a hot J Brand leather jacket, or go casual in a Hale Bob leopard-print tunic  and Alice & Olivia black leather leggings paired with Victoria’s Secret black ankle booties.

The slight “bouffant” look, so popular in the 60’s, also makes a comeback this season. EXTREME SIDE PARTS

At the 2014 ACM Awards, Taylor Swift looked chic in the Fall 2014 “extreme side part” Hairstyle trend, paired with a teased 60’s bob. Spotted at runways from Stella McCartney to Alexander Wang, the 1930’s-style boyish comb over took a more confident and sexy look this Fall 2014. To achieve Taylor’s casual part, L’Oreal Paris Ambassador Peter Gray suggests using your fingers instead of a brush to style your part. For a dramatic side part, stylist Paul Hanlon brushes hair across forehead and secures behind ears with a spritz of Bumble and Bumble finishing spray. Update your look in an instant this Fall by changing your part, with zero commitment, just a glamorous you.
