NO RULES, JUST RIGHT

unnamed

For years we’ve all known the simple fashion rules to follow: no white after Labor Day, match your purse with your shoes, don’t mix patterns, wear either gold or silver, and so on. This Season, however, rules need not apply. More than ever before, designers this Season are pushing the limits of fashion “etiquette” and throwing out the fashion rule book. This Season is all about expressing your individuality and uniqueness. If you love it, wear it. We’re following the great actress Katherine Hepburn’s advice: “if you obey all the rules, you miss all the fun.” So this Winter, forget the fashion rules, and turn your “Fashion Don’ts into Fashion Do’s.” To help get you started, we’ve included our favorite “Fashion Do” finds here. Take a peek at what we will be trying this Winter.

 SOCKS WITH HEELS

Not just for little girls anymore, from Saint Laurent to Tory Burch, designers covered the runway this Season pairing socks with heels, sandals, and open-toe wedges. On warmer Winter days this Season, be bold and try this look. For a streamlined style, pair a fitted Tory Burch grey cashmere sweater with a chic Dolce & Gabbana A-line skirt, adding matching color socks with heels (as pictured above). For a bolder, high fashion look, we love actress Diane Keaton’s black pumps and white socks style spotted on the Red Carpet at the 2014 Zurich Film Festival’s Golden Icon Award Ceremony. No need to put away your summer sandals either! Pair your favorites with socks to keep your toes warm for chillier Winter days, as spotted on celebs like Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Rita Ora.

SHORTS FOR FALL

Don’t hang up your summer shorts just yet. Fashion rules usually state, shorts are for summer, and pants are for winter, but no more. Carry summer’s sun kissed style all Season long by pairing your favorite summer shorts with warm tights or leggings, boots, a chic sweater, scarf, and jacket and you are ready to hit the streets in style. Look for black tights in a variety of unique patterns, trending this Season, to pair with your favorite jean shorts. For dressier occasions, pair your tailored shorts with solid black tights, a sequined top or flowy blouse, and chic heels for an evening out. We love Hale Bob’s sequined embroidered black shorts paired with Nicole Miller’s gold sequined top, and sheer black tights. Finish the look by pre-ordering Steve Madden’s newest black suede pump “The Varcityy,” and you’ll by the talk of your next holiday gathering.

 NAVY AND BLACK

Pairing navy and black used to be a fashion”no no,” but this Season designers from Rag and Bone to Joe Fresh to Elie Saab featured navy and black paired together for their Fall 2014 runway collections. For casual, try pairing Hudson’s skinny jeans with Alice + Olivia’s oversized chunky black sweater and black over-the-knee boots by Marc Jacobs. For work, go in reverse, and pair your navy sweater with a chic black-and-white striped skirt, black tights, and black booties. Pairing navy and black is a subtle way to make a big fashion statement this Season that you don’t always have to follow the traditional fashion color schemes.

WINTER WHITE

No white after Labor Day they used to say. We say No Way! Pull out your Winter Whites and sparkles like a snowflake all winter long. Pair your summer white tank top with an Asos white off-the-shoulder sweater, skinny white jeans, and Fendi white leather booties for a cool, casual winter day. Recently spotted at the London premiere of “The Hunger Games,” actress Jennifer Lawrence sports our favorite winter white style with a cool white pantsuit. Get the actress’s chic look with Hale Bob’s white satin studded wide leg pants paired with Chelsea28 black satin tank and Hale Bob’s ivory stretch ponte studded jacket. For a glittering finish, pair with newly released Jimmy Choo white shimmer leather sandals with crystals and you’ll feel like a star.

SEQUINS FOR DAYTIME

No need to hide your sequins in the closet for daytime, bring them out and shine all day. This Season, don’t be afraid to wear your fancy sequined dress, top, or pants for daytime activities or to the office. Those sequined pants you always see on the sales rack at stores and wonder who would wear those? Snatch them up for a dazzling daytime look for winter. For work, pair gold sequined 3.1 Phillip Lim pants with a white tank, a black blazer, and chic strappy heels. For another sequined look, invest this Season into Hale Bob’s glam gold floral sequin dress and it’ll go double duty for you this year. For daytime, pair this dress with a chic Jones black fur coat, black tights, and tailored Miu Miu black flats and for night, dance the night away paired with Christian Louboutin glitter strappy heels. So go ahead and glitter day OR night this Season.

MIXED PRINTS

Mix things up this Fall Season. No need to wonder anymore if plaid goes with stripes or if a red handbag pairs with blue heels. Anything goes this Season. We love fashion blogger Cara Loren’s “holiday” look pairing skinny plaid pants with a chic leopard coat. Swipe on your favorite bright red lipstick, and you are set for your holiday event. Or go for a softer mix of prints like actress and fashion blogger Jamie Chung, featured in the photo above. She paired a 10 Crosby Derek Lam checkered pencil skirt with an Isabel Marant floral jacket, pieces suitable for summer or winter. Get her chic look with Hale Bob’s printed rayon ponte pencil skirt and pair with a Hale Bob mixed print blouse for a chic Winter style, great for the office and easily segues into the cocktail hour for after work events. Mix it up this Winter and don’t always play by the pattern rules.

SNEAKERS WITH EVERYTHING

This Season, runways were filled with models pairing dresses and skirts of every length and style with casual sneakers.  Celebrities from Rihanna to Beyonce to Kristen Stewart have been spotted sporting the trendy style this season, so jump on board and pair your comfy sneakers with a dress or skirt for daytime style and fashion. Get the above chic city style by pairing a long-sleeved Marc Jacobs wool blend black shift dress with Christian Louboutin animal print wedge sneakers or go bright and bold with DKNY’s “Cindy” red hot wedge sneaker. Add 2015’s newest collection of sneakers to your wardrobe, great for Winter and Spring, with Burberry’s bright mixed color sneaker spotted at London fashion week and Bottega Veneta’s sporty-chic sneaker, perfectly paired with Winter and Spring dresses.

MIXED METALS

Silver or Gold? No need to choose one over the other this Season. Mix your favorite gold AND silver bangles and baubles together for a trendy modern look. For style inspiration, we love Michael Kors’ fashion accessory style. Check out his jewelry and accessories for creative ways to mix and match chic jewelry style. Get started by simply pairing your favorite gold bangles interspersed with silver bracelets. Combine gold and silver rings on the same hand and finish the look with simple gold and silver chain necklaces. Spice things up with an exclusive Michael Kors Pave mixed metal ring, a John Hardy “Dragon” cuff, and Betsey Johnson’s “Hollywood Glam” crystal stone necklace. Mix and match for a fun, “uniquely YOU” Winter accessory style that will have you at the center of everyone’s conversation.

Rules were made to be broken and this Season aim to have a little fun with your Winter Wardrobe. Instead of buying a new outfit, try mixing and matching your current collection in new and unusual ways for a completely new look. Be your own fashion designer this year and break the fashion rules whether it’s mixing gold and silver together, wearing socks with your heels to the office, or pairing your favorite summer shorts with tights. We’d love to hear your thoughts on what “fashion faux pas” you will try this Winter. Comment here and also visit us on our Facebook page Posh at Play.

Being in the “mature” generation (aka Baby Boomers), I tend to be a bit more conservative, but I like “mixing the metals” and “shoes/purse don’t match’. I love the freedom to dress like you want!!
